Where should a beginner start?

Start with a small group of keys and a relaxed, repeatable hand position. On a QWERTY keyboard, the raised marks on F and J help you return to the home row without looking down. Work on finding the right key before setting a speed target.

A course gives practice a sequence. A typing test measures how you combine those skills under a timer. Use lessons to learn unfamiliar movements, then use the same test duration to compare your progress.

1. Practice home-row letters and spaces in short patterns.
2. Add upper- and lower-row letters, then familiar words.
3. Introduce Shift, capitals and sentence punctuation.
4. Add numbers and mixed text once ordinary words feel controlled.

Choose a lesson using your mistakes

If you repeatedly hit a neighboring key, return to a smaller letter drill. If capitals interrupt your rhythm, practice a few short names and sentences with Shift. If errors appear near the end of a test, work on a steadier pace before extending the duration.

Repeat an exercise carefully, then try unfamiliar words using the same keys. Accurate typing on a new passage is a better signal to move forward than memorizing one lesson.

Combine lessons, tests and typing games

Try a short session with three parts: a focused lesson, a timed check, and a keyboard game for variety. Keep the lesson as the main practice task; the test helps you decide what needs attention next.

Record WPM and accuracy together. Compare several sessions with the same duration and settings, rather than treating one personal best as your usual typing speed. There is no fixed number of days that guarantees a particular WPM.
